This note is inspired by you. You with your
dark feet but bright yellow nail polish. You with wide grin and lips that are a
too full. You whose weight is in the triple digits, dress size in the double
but relationship status in the single. You who loves to cook even when you’re
not sure how. You who loves to read and get lost in literature. You who loves
to rant and tweet, you treasure your perspective and opinion. You who forgives
easily and forgets, you who dances to Miguel’s Adorn in the living room while
your cat watches wondering what ceremony this was and why it was left out. You
haven’t forgotten how to love yourself and how to laugh. Never forget.
The music plays loud and sweeps you away.
You twirl and close your eyes remembering how there was a time you despised
yourself. You hated your dark skin that made you appear darkest in every photo.
You detested how people always passed snide comments before you went on the
bus, they made you hate yourself. Your inability to fit right in made you side
line yourself and apologise for who you are. They made you hate the very fabric
that made you who you are now. They made you reduce yourself, they made you
choose to stay quiet when you should have spoken up. You hated yourself so much
you pushed any guy who showed interest in you towards your best friend; she was
pretty, she knew how to fit in with the definition of perfect.
The chorus plays one more time and you
dance. You don’t know how to dance. You are not a ballerina but you leap and do
a made up pirouette. Your cat looks at you with fear in its eyes, it is afraid
that you will topple over and hurt both you; you look at it and laugh. You are
filled with a deep appreciation for who you are, an appreciation for your
experiences and a respect for your scars and abrasions. There was a time that
you hated who you are but that time is long gone but you haven’t forgotten it.
Without it you wouldn’t have been able to appreciate who you are now. You have
learned the love of a creator that engineered you perfectly for your purpose to
love your family and friends, to reach people that only you can and most
importantly to love yourself. You have learned the love of the creator who
counts your hair, knows you personally and orders your steps for your good, a
creator who wants the best for you simply because you are you.
You spin around and let love adorn you, a
love for the importance of being completely yourself and completely present in
this moment. You let it pour over you and you bask in how far you have come.
This note is inspired by you. You who has
been broken but refuses to stay broken. You who has been betrayed but refuses
to stay bitter. You who has committed wrong but has chosen to forgive yourself.
Happiness is a choice, you have to let it. In this moment you choose to let
love adorn you; a love for you.
